Day three at Torrey Pines included some monster dunks and an ugly incident in the final game of the night when part of the near capacity crowd had already left for the night.

St. Patrick vs. Redondo Union Semifinal:  End of Game Incident

With 7.2 seconds remaining and St. Patrick leading 54-51 Celtic Bryce Aiken ‘16 was fouled and then a fight broke out between multiple players that lasted about 30 seconds.

St. Patrick was not in the bonus at the time so they did not get any free throws for the original foul.

Redondo’s Billy Preston ’17 and Elijah Nesbit ‘16 were ejected while five St. Patrick players were ejected including Bryce Aiken.

Redondo’s Ryse Williams ’17 was given six free throws due to technical fouls.  Williams makes the first five free throws and misses the last one but Redondo leads 56-54 with 7.2 seconds remaining and has the ball.  Redondo would go onto make two more free throws and win the game 58-54.

Mark Vital ’16 Dunk Forgotten After Incident?

Prime Prep’s Mark Vital had one of the best dunks ever at the National Division vs. La Costa Canyon on day three.  The last dunk as good as Vital’s may have been the Jeremy Tyler ’10 dunk from the 2008 tournament vs. West Valley (Hemet, CA) in the quarterfinals; Tyler dunk is at the 1:11 mark of the video.

Local Teams

La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, CA) lost to Prime Prep (Dallas, TX) 66-58 while Foothills Christian, still without T.J. Leaf ’16, lost to Jefferson (Brooklyn, NY) 77-47.  The one bright spot was host Torrey Pines prevailed over Westchester (Los Angeles, CA) 45-36 in the consolation semifinal and will face Lawndale in the consolation finals; the Cardinals feature SDSU signee Broderick Jones ‘15.

La Costa Canyon Gets Prime Preview

Some La Costa Canyon players watched Prime Prep (Dallas, TX) play Balboa (San Diego, CA) on Sunday at the San Diego Jewish Academy because the Mavericks played Prime Prep on Day 3 of the National Division.  Prime Prep prevailed over Balboa 71-67.
