CIF-San Diego Section Football

A Brief Historical Timeline

1891-92:  San Diego (Russ High) plays first game on Christmas Day vs. “San Diego Football Club”, group of adults (result not know).

1898-99:  San Diego (Russ High) wins at Escondido 6-0 in the first game between San Diego high schools.

1911-12:  Army-Navy Academy plays in their inaugural season.  Army-Navy was located in Pacific Beach back then.

1915-16:  Sweetwater plays in their inaugural season.

1916-17:  San Diego (12-0) defeats Manual Arts 9-0 at Washington Park (Los Angeles) to win the Southern California championship.

1942-43:  World War II cancels playoffs, shortens schedules and restricts travel to local (San Diego) teams only.

1960-61:  Inaugural season for the CIF-San Diego section.

1979-80:  First season for 3 divisions (class 3A, 2A, IA).

1985-86:  San Diego City Schools change from 8-millimeter film to video tapes for game tapes.

1985-86:  CIF allows third party teams to video tape games for scouting.

1986-87:  Inaugural season for 8-man.

1993-94:  First season for 4 divisions (I, II, III, IV).

2005-06:  First season for 5 divisions (I, II, III, IV, V).

2006-07:  First season, since 1927, with a state championship game (I, II, III).

2008-09:  State Championship game expands from 3 to 5 games (Open, I, II, III, Small Schools).

FIRST LOSS:  De La Salle traveled to Seattle, Washington for the first game of the 2004 season on September 4th at Qwest Field (home of the Seahawks)

Before 24,987 De La Salle lost to Bellevue (WA) 39-20


The next week De La Salle lost to Clovis West (Fresno) 30-12

And the next week De La Salle tied Palma 7-7

Two weeks later De La Salle lost to Mission Viejo 17-14

De La Salle also tied Clayton Valley (Concord) 17-17

De La Salle finished 8-3-2 in 2004

The seniors on the 2004 team were in kindergarten the last time De La Salle lost a game

De La Salle was 185-1 from 1989-2004 (to first game of 2004) and 244-4 from 1984-2004 (to first game of 2004)


Bellevue finished undefeated in 2004 winning their 4th consecutive Washington state title

and finished # 2 nationally behind Southlake Carroll (TX), most likely because De La Salle lost three games and tied twice
