CIF-San Diego Section Field Hockey
A Brief Historical Timeline
1974-75: Inaugural season (winter season) with 25 teams. Founding mother was Jody Johnston (El Cajon). Title IX opens sports for girls.
1983-84: Moved from winter to the fall partly because girls' soccer was taking too many of the potential players.
1984-85: With only 19 teams CIF commissioner Jan Jessop (a former player and coach) says "it'll probably fold in the next two or three years" (after the 1984 Olympic Games).
1986-87: Bonita Vista adds team.
1987-88: Rancho Buena Vista (new school) adds team.
1988-89: Hilltop adds team.
1998-99: Eastlake, Orange Glen, San Dieguito Academy add teams.
1998-99: Critical shortage of referees (16), including 6 new referees.
2001-02: Santana, Rancho Bernardo, Clairemont & Chula Vista add teams.
2002-03: Divisional play begins with divisions I and II.
2002-03: Pt. Loma, Valley Center & Castle Park add teams.
2003-04: Mt. Carmel & Helix Charter add teams.
2006-07: Canyon Crest Academy (new school) adds team.
